How this pitching program works:

This program combines MLB expertise with weekly academy training and Internet technology. We send your piching video to ASMI to analyze the pitching mechanics using the most advanced pitching data available. Your results are published to your personalized web portal where you, your coaches and parents (your Member’s Network) can see your pitching results and the monthly recommendations for conditioning, pitching drills and performance behavior coaching. While the content of this program is vast, the implementation is intentionally simple.  Performance of the program will be implemented and supervised at The Next Level PRC in Madisonville.

Biomechanical Analysis of your pitching delivery – A detailed motion analysis of your pitching delivery to show you where you need to make adjustments to improve your velocity/accuracy while reducing your risk of injury.

Your personalized 12 month Physical Conditioning plan – 3P provides you with a conditioning program designed specifically for pitchers. Each month you receive a new program based on your age to help you be in All-Star shape.

A detailed Skills and Drills Program – These are the same skills and drills used by many MLB pitchers designed help them perform like Cy Young winners.

Performance Behavior Coaching – Now you can master the mental game of baseball and consistentl compete at the highest level.

Physical Screens - A detailed strength and flexibility assessment provides vital information regarding your current injury risk and performance deficits.

3P Biomechanical Analysis – Delivered to your computer

At the heart of the 3P Program is a comprehensive motion analysis of your pitching delivery called the 3P Biomechanical Analysis. Through this in-depth analysis, we measure 14 specific delivery points within your pitching routine to determine where you are losing power and have significant risk of injury.

This analysis identifies where you have RED FLAGS and YELLOW FLAGS across your full range of motion while pitching. The red flags are areas that should be addressed immediately if you want to perform at the highest level. Ignoring this guidance increases the probability of injury. Yellow flags are used to show where you may not be in immediate risk of injury but caution is advised. The yellow flags are less critical than red flags, yet scientific evidence has proven that your body will eventually break down and shoulder and/or elbow injury is likely to occur.

Even when a pitcher is pitching well, studies show that:

  •   Over 90% of all pitchers have RED or YELLOW flags in their delivery and are
            not performing  as well as they can and are at a high risk of injury.
  •   MLB pitchers are the most talented in the world yet, the rate of injury is
            alarming. Last year alone, $1.3 Billion was paid to MLB pitchers and over
            $300 Million was for pitchers on the disabled list.

Injuries are rampant among baseball pitchers of all ages. Unfortunately, in most cases pitchers, parents and coaches don’t recognize the risks of injury and until it is too late. The statistics at the amateur level are very compelling indicating that there is a problem that has yet to be solved:

  • Tommy John surgeries have increased by over 700% in the last 10 years
  • 45% of pitchers under the age of 12 experience chronic elbow pain
  • 60% of high school pitchers complain of chronic elbow pain

You are never too young or too late to benefit from the 3P program. Through his research Dr. James Andrews and the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), has concluded that the seeds for pitching injury are often planted during Little League play. Studies conclusively indicate that pitchers who are injured in high school, college and at the professional level developed their flaws during their formative years.

This analysis identifies the characteristics for peak performance as well as the 9 major red flags and 5 cautionary (yellow) flags that hinder performance and lead to injury. The measurements are both angular and distance related. They compare the athlete’s measurements to those of the elite pitchers in their age category to determine where the pitcher has flaws in his delivery. Flaws that will reduce performance and increase the risk of injury. Over 1,300 MLB pitchers such as CC Sabathia, Tim Hudson, Roger Clemens, Rich Harden and Scott Kazmir have each contributed to the development of the program


PHYSICAL CONDITIONING

The 3P Physical Conditioning program in conjunction with The Next Level has been designed specifically for pitchers to help them reach their peak performance.

Pitching requires specific muscular strength, flexibility and endurance.  The wrong conditioning program can actually reduce performance (ball velocity and control) and drastically increase the risk of injury.  The 3P program was developed by proven experts at the major league level and some of our era’s greatest pitchers have used this program.

Leading the team of the 3P Sports conditioning experts is Jeff Mangold who was the head strength and conditioning coach with the New York Yankees and part of three World Series Championship teams. The program at The Next Level also includes exercises developed by pitching gurus such as Ron Wolforth, Tom House, Dick Mills, Paul Reddick and Steve Ellis that are specifically designed to improve joint integrity, durability and pitching velocity.

A major reason for injury at the amateur level is physical immaturity and general weakness.  Many amateur pitchers use generic conditioning and weight lifting programs.  These exercise routines build the wrong muscle groups for pitchers and actually reduce your ability to throw with power and accuracy. The 3P program has created a specific physical conditioning program that is tailored to the proper pitching muscles….for strength and flexibility…..for your legs, core, torso, arms, and shoulders so you can pitch like a pro.  Each exercise not only addresses the red flags identified by the Biomechanical Analysis so that you remain injury free but also tackles performance issues such as velocity, pitch movement, command and endurance.

The same conditioning programs used with All-Star pitchers are the foundation of the program you will use to achieve your All-Star performance. The program is predicated on the same three phase conditioning plan used by major league players including Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, David Cohn, David Wells and Orlando Hernández.  It features a pre-season, in-season and post-season curriculum that has been fine tuned for the amateur market.

All of the exercises will be clearly explained and demonstrated with the student also able to access them at home using a short video format.  The focus is on how to safely conduct each movement for maximum results and plan for the proper amount of rest so each athlete will stay energized and strong over the course of the entire year.

Each month you will automatically receive a new conditioning program within your 3P internet portal.  Each of the exercises was selected for you based on your age and month of the year.

Skills and Drills

The 3P Skills and Drills program was designed to help pitchers of all ages achieve a clean and effective pitching delivery.  Each month you will receive a new set of drills that when mastered will enable you to be one of the premier pitchers in your league.

The 3P pitching drills will improve your:

  • Arm strength for increased velocity
  • Pitching accuracy

  • “Feel” for an effective delivery

These routines have been used by major league pitchers that have achieved the highest level of success….including Cy Young award winners.  Developed by Coach Rick Peterson and tested at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) pitching lab, the 3P Skills and Drills are designed to help you become the best you can be while significantly reduce the potential for injury based on the red flags identified by the Biomechanical Analysis.

Every pitching drill is explained and performed in the facility and is also available in an easy to understand video format within the 3P Internet Portal.  Specific ball grips and pitching scenarios will also be explored with occasional guest lectures and clinics from local area coaches, scouts and ex-pro players.


3P Performance Behavior Coaching

Every great athlete knows that the mental game of sports is critical to master in order to achieve your true potential.  Great performers of today and years past like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Al Leiter, Tom Glavine, Nolan Ryan and many others stress that their greatest asset is their ability to control their thoughts and emotions so that they can execute effectively in a consistent way.

Without the ability to call on the appropriate performance based behaviors, an athlete never fully recognizes his full talent or potential.

The 3P Program offers coaching and information that will help pitchers of all ages harness the powerful mental side of the game.  With this program, you will:

This program was developed by Coach Rick Peterson with regular contributions from sports psychology expert Harvey Dorfman.  Peterson and Dorfman are known as two of the greatest leaders in sports psychology in Major League Baseball.

Coach Peterson is known throughout MLB as one of the leaders in harnessing the mental side of athletic performance.  Rick headed the sports psychology program for the Chicago White Sox and integrates the principals of that program to provide you with personal online coaching.

Harvey Dorfman has been recognized as the most valuable player in MLB when it comes to sports psychology.  Harvey has worked with many of the great stars and has helped them reach their true potential by effectively managing their thoughts.  Previously, Harvey was a coach with the Oakland Athletics, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays.  Today, he is part of the super agent Scott Boras’s company where he provides coaching to many of the Boras athletes.  Harvey has written numerous books on this topic including:

The information in this program will be in the form of short videos, audio instruction and brief articles.  Each segment is designed to be easy to understand while providing practical tips for applying the principals.  Every month new information and segments will be offered to you so you can master the mental side of your game and be the premier player in your league.


Physical Screens

It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to be sure any specific imbalances in strength and flexibility are addressed before you begin ANY conditioning program.  Imbalances are the absolute number one reason why repetitive use injuries occur.  And the sad thing is that they are totally preventable if they are assessed and re-assessed on a reguar basis. 

Several key areas for the throwing athete involve imbalances in the rotator cuff, scapular musculature and joint capsule.  Other imbalances include hip Abductor/Adductor strength, hip flexor and hamstring flexibility, as well as hip rotational mobility.  If the athlete does not address these issues, they will not ony be at risk for injury, but will never be ale to achieve maximum performance levels. 

Even if you are participating in a strength and conditioning program right now, did your trainer provide a specific strength and flexibility assessment for pitchers or at the very least a functional movement screen?  Were you given a personized workout that addressed those imbalances and was age specific? Or were you thrown into a generic "baseball" strength program..... or even a more troubling thought just given a workout "book" to follow without proper supervision or progressions?  Not cool!!

And....your strength pogram could potentially be doing more harm than good! Heavy Olympic lifting. Squats. Bench...All staple strength training exercises....are NOT conducise to the explosive and violent activity of pitching which is peformed in all three planes of movment.

PROGRAM SPECIFICS:

The 3P program begin after Labor Day and will run 3 days per week (Monday Tuesday, and Thursday) from September through December at The Next Level PRC in Madisonville and include individual online video profiles, tracking workbooks, lectures, and a complimentary membership to the Sandlot Academy. Each session will last 1.5 to 2 hrs and will include a neuromuscular wake-up segment, dynamic flexibility warm-up, a functional strength segement, arm care/arm action segment, pre-pitch routines, and charted bullpen sessions. We will regularly track and chart drill, exercise, and pitching sessions via radar, repetitions or time. All players will be accountable for goal creation and knowing their current progress as it is only through intent, repetition, dedication and committment to the program that they will improve!


3P PROGRAM TUITION:

3P Video Analysis with Internet Portal = $359/yr

This includes the ASMI video analysis and 12 month internet portal with online access to your analysis, age appropriate conditioning program, skills and drills, and behavioral coaching.

Monthly Next Level Tuition/Screens = $149/mo

This includes three 1.5-2hr training sessions per week, physical and movement screens, advanced conditioning and velocity training, goal tracking workbooks, lectures and clinics, Full Sandlot membership, and personalized online video profile to add unlimited pictures and videos.

The 3P Program monthly tuition is less than the cost of two to three private pitching lessons yet provides complete piece of mind and at $149 per month would be a bargain!  But since I know there will be skeptics, I am going to make it an even easier decision.
